Economic crisis

I have always said that in the economic downturn, every one suffers.

More so the animals. More pets are being neglected and abandoned as human friends got more busy trying to make ends meet. Whether it is for name or for money, people continue to use their ignorance and pride in the continuation to create negative karma.

More pets are being abandoned, and it is certainly sad to know that many of them died on the street or caught by the authorities who eventually put them to sleep.

Thanks to our team of helpers and animal lovers, we are still running this animal shelter for stray cats. We can't take in all of them, we can only do what we can, and continue to make a difference in every cat that we saved.

People have asked me if we have any pedigree kittens for adoption. Unfortunately, that is not our line of service, though occasionally we do have kittens from by newly saved pregnant cats.

You may like to know that we have a sterilization plan in place to prevent further suffering.

We need your help, to keep us afloat and to keep this shelter going. If you would like to adopt a cat or sponsor a cat, please let us know.

Before you abandon your house cat..

Yesterday I had an interesting call from a lady who dun want to leave her name and dun even want to tell me where she got my number.

She claimed she had a cat to "give away" and it is a very good house cat.

When asked further, she said that she just had a baby and realised that the cats dropped off fur once in a while (as if human dun) and the cats poo smelled (as if she haven't seen cat poo before) and she is afraid her baby will be infected (I dun know what).

From the conversation, I felt that she is determined to get rid of her cat. I warned her that house cat will not be able to survive out in the street and it will either be knocked down by cars or got infected and die.

She gave me an indifference reply, and asked me if I could speak to her mother and mother in law about her cat's problem.

I told her frankly that she dun have a cat problem, she has a mother-in-law and mother problem. She replied that I was sarcastic. I even offer to house her cat until she is ready to take it home for a fee... and she started bargaining before I could tell her the price by saying that she can provide food for the cat.

I gave up.

More pets abandoned during this economic tsunami

Oh No... because of the economic tsunami, many people are throwing out their cats, dogs and even rabbits.

These pets are not street smart and probably got so frightened by the traffic and strangers that they are more prone to accidents and infections.

Many house pets are also not able to take care of itself and abandoning them in the concrete jungle are definitely not humane at all.

Raising a pet and abandoning it is an act of ignorance.

A lot of these are designer animals. They cannot be "freed" anywhere. It adds a new dimension of cruelty, being abandoned and unable to fend for itself. A wild animal is better equipped.

Maybe a law to stop this abusive treatment of pets is needed to put a stop to this practice.

Will people throw out their children and elderly if the economic situation gets worst???

Meanwhile, we are collecting more abandoned animals and funds are running very low..

We always have suitable cats and kittens for adoption to good homes. They are fostered at home environment. All are vaccinated, dewormed and defleaed, and sterilized if more than 6 months old. Please email siaping@yahoo.com to fix a viewing appointment. A minimal adoption fee to cover the cost of of vaccination ($20 per dose) and sterilization ($25 for male, $70 for female) will apply.

Cats for You?

During the SARS period, some people have the mistaken identity to think the ordinary stray cats are civet cats (which is actually from the Rats family) and said that they spread SARS. A massive search and kill was launched in Singapore during that time and as many as 200 cats were terminated per day.

Friends of the Cats Welfare Society and a team of volunteers started our own campaign to re-home the stray cats, and housed the healthy one to prevent merciless killings.

Christabelle (my close friend) and her team took in abt 150 cats into our house and provide a "temporary" animal shelter, hoping that once the pandemic is over, the cats can be re-home or adopted.

We managed to re-home the more beautiful cats, the kitten, the long hairs (most of them in my home because of their need for aircon) and the balance of the unclaimed cats are still with us.

Just last week, Sunflower, a beautiful blogger, bought some cats food for the shelter... Thank you.

So if you know of anyone who wish to adopt a cat, a kitten, or who is willing to support such a cause in animal welfare and protection, please let me know.
